The one wholly integrated Global Technological System (GTS) is run by global elites. These elites devote themselves, even more than we ordinary people do, to the six destructive but conventional
gods of Olympianity: (1) Jupiter,
god of politics; (2) Mars, god of war; (3) Vulcan, god of technology; (4)
Venus, goddess of sex; (5) Pluto, god of money; and (6) Bacchus, god of
consumption. Sadly, because—like
these elites—we too are Olympians at heart (even those of us who call ourselves
Christians), we attribute unusual virtue
to them because they are the most powerful in politics, war, etc. But Andy Xie, once the chief Asia-Pacific
economist for banking giant Morgan Stanley, thinks we shouldn’t. In a recent
article (May 2016) directly about the economic collapse we’re facing, he
indirectly strips these Olympian elites
of the unmerited glory we Olympians falsely attribute to them. He strips
them of it because the economic mess we’re in is their fault.
Andy points out that the economic turmoil we are facing was completely avoidable. Instead, this turmoil was caused by “mismanagement by the very people who attend the G20 meetings, the Davos boondoggle, and so many other global meetings that waste taxpayers’ money and put inept leaders in the limelight.” These elites, then, are incompetent and demonstrate this by their mismanagement of the GTS. They waste taxpayers’ money by using it to gather at well-publicized meetings where nonetheless no decisions helpful to the economy or ordinary people are made. Finally, the corporate media which they control cooperates in portraying them as wise decisive leaders when in fact they’re not.
Worse, these elites are self-centered. They persistently structure the GTS to favor themselves at the expense of all others. They use “monetary policy…to pump up financial markets in the name of stimulating growth for people’s benefit.” They also use it to inflate the value of luxury real estate in places like New York, London, and Hong Kong, as well as to create a wide variety of other financial bubbles. So not only do they rig the system. They lie about it through the media and spokespeople they control.
Elites also use their power to escape responsibility. Agents of the US government should have arrested elites responsible for causing the economic crisis of 2008. Instead, elites of the government and the Federal Reserve created $5 trillion magically and gave it to the very elites who used the windfall to increase their corrupt control of the GTS.
Jesus Christ is the truth who sets us free to love and leads us into fullness of life. We live as faithful witnesses to him when we are Christ-centered rather than self-centered and share his truth, freedom, love, and vitality with others.
In dreadful contrast, the six false gods of Olympianity—and all of the elites who serve them—are self-centered rather than Christ-centered, seek power not freedom, base control on lies not truth, are indifferent to all others rather than committed to their well-being (love), and bend the whole GTS toward death not life.
We can see Olympian self-centeredness, falsehood, power, indifference, and death in the actions of the elite who manage the GTS on behalf of the Olympian gods. Self-centeredness: they rig the GTS in their favor. Falsehood: these elites lie about what they are doing and falsely portray themselves on TV as wise decisive leaders. Ordinary Olympians indulge the illusion that elites are wise and caring despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Power: elites use their control of others to exploit them and to free fellow elites from responsibility for their disastrous policies. Indifference: They use taxpayer’s money to finance meaningless meetings with other elites at expensive places but, much more importantly, they don’t care that hundreds of millions of people suffer from the economic turmoil they create. Death: the direct result of elite mismanagement.
The GTS is based on lies and illusions and headed for disaster. Jesus is calling us to question the lies, abandon the illusions, and start creating, with him, a different society and culture based on the truth he is.
