Like any other self-respecting god, Jupiter provides us with the justification we crave. We human beings are weak and fragile creatures. We cannot possibly overcome our sense of guilt ourselves. We must have the help of culturally approved gods, and the shared devotion of others to those gods, to have any sense of justification, forgiveness, and merit. Jupiter does this for us.
Olympianity is the religion of power. Jupiter provides us all of the justification we need to do whatever is necessary to gain and maintain political power. To be clear, politics is the struggle between individuals to control a group, between groups to control society, and between societies to control the world. Jupiter justifies whatever falsehood, coercion, violence, destruction, betrayal, and death are necessary to gain and maintain that control.
When we devote ourselves to Jupiter, we understand our words simply as means to an end: maintaining political power. So we feel completely justified whether we speak the whole truth, half-truths, or complete lies. With Jupiter, words are not true or false. They are useful or not.
When we devote ourselves to Jupiter, we also understand other people simply as means to that same end of maintaining political power. So we also feel completely justified whether we care deeply for others, remain indifferent toward them, or kill them. With Jupiter, other humans are not important as humans. With Jupiter, other humans are either useful or not. If they are useful, we take care of them; if they are unimportant we ignore them; if they are obstacles or threats, we get rid of them. It’s that simple.
